Please Don't Miss this Event!

May 7th between 10:30 am and 2:30 pm please make sure to pop by the Ocean Park Hall for the Emergency Preparedness Fair!

The Ocean Park Community Association has been working really hard this past year to bring together an Ocean Park Emergency Response Plan, the bulk order of 72 Hour Emergency Kits (which recently just passed $12,000 in orders - our target was $8000) and the Emergency Preparedness Fair with safety representatives from BC Hydro, The City of Surrey Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program, Forager Foundation, Primary Care First Aid and 72hours.ca and more to come!

Enjoy fresh popcorn courtesy of our good friends at Schill Insurance, entertainment for the kids, an opportunity to ask questions, gather resources and GET PREPARED AND a raffle draw courtesy of Homelife Benchmark Realty Corp. White Rock for a two person 72 Hour Emergency Kit!

The more we are prepared in our own homes, the better equipped we will be to help each other if disaster strikes. We hope to see you there!

We were in contact with The City of Surrey in regards to concern over the use of pesticides and herbicides in Elgin Heritage Park and Redwood Park recently. This is the response we were provided.

"The exposure potential to the public from herbicide treatments at Redwood Park and Elgin Estates Park is extremely low. The targeted plants are spot sprayed with a very small amount of herbicide. Within a couple of hours the herbicide has dried on the plants limiting the transfer potential of the herbicide to people and animals. The public notices for the herbicide treatments are posted for 48hrs after the treatments as per Provincial laws and regulations, and City of Surrey procedures.

The majority of the invasive plants removed by Surrey Parks is by mechanical removal (digging out or cutting). Parks tries to limit the use of herbicide to sites where the invasive plant has become widespread and/or when mechanical removal is not an effective control method. At Redwood and Elgin, the blackberry is scattered throughout the meadows. The effectiveness of digging out the blackberry and tansy in the grass is limited as it is difficult to remove all of the roots. As well, there is knotweed present in the Elgin meadow that the only effective means to control is by herbicide – digging out knotweed does not control it. The Elgin meadow is on top of an old dump <<this is I did not now - R. >> so we are not able to dig very deep – is some places garbage is exposed 30 cm from the surface.

Parks has experimented with ‘green’ types of herbicides like vinegar based products but they were not effective in killing the plants. We found that these ‘green’ herbicides would kill the above ground portions of the plants but would not kill the roots. After the treatment the plant would grow back. "

If you have more concerns or questions for the City, please call (604-501-5130).

Last year, around this time the Ocean Park Community Association hosted a Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup at all of our shorelines. The event, was a great success and a tonne of garbage was collected by local residents (likely many of you!.)
One of the most common piece of garbage collected was plastic bags - in the forest, on the beach and along the streets. :(

The great news is this weekend, our new TD Bank is swapping plastic bags for reusable bags THIS Saturday at the Ocean Park branch! Simply drop off your plastic bags on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10 am – 4 pm and they’ll replace them with environmentally friendly, reusable ones.

BONUS! Then grab a ballot and you could win $1,000 of groceries during the Grocery Giveaway Event. Full contest details at the bank. :)
