Westland Insurance

Meet Jyoti Toor, Branch Manager of Westland Insurance, Ocean Park
Jyoti Toor leads the Ocean Park branch of Westland Insurance with dedication and experience. Born and raised in India, Jyoti moved to Canada in 1989, settling in Vancouver before making Surrey her home, where she lives with her husband and three grown children. She became the Ocean Park Westland branch manager in 2022, bringing over 12 years of experience in the insurance industry.
Westland Insurance began as a single, family-owned brokerage in Ladner, BC, in 1980. Since then, it has grown into Canada’s largest independent, Canadian-owned brokerage, offering comprehensive personal and commercial insurance solutions. With over 3,000 employees across 250 locations nationwide, Westland continues to expand, including plans to enter the U.S. market.
At the Ocean Park branch, Jyoti is proud to work with a small, close-knit team of seasoned professionals, some with over 25 years of industry expertise. The team is well-versed in their specialties, ensuring clients receive tailored coverage at competitive premiums. Their strong relationships with clients stem from being local to the community, allowing them to effectively understand and address unique needs. The team is easily accessible in person, by phone, or via email, making insurance consultations and support seamless.
One of Westland’s distinguishing features is its staff’s dual roles as underwriters and brokers. Notably, they are not commission-based, ensuring their focus remains on finding the best solutions for clients. Claims are processed directly at local offices, adding to the convenience and efficiency of their service.
Jyoti is passionate about the Ocean Park community and enjoys participating in local events with her team. Westland Insurance supports community involvement by offering employees paid volunteer days and encouraging them to give back to the areas they serve.
The Ocean Park Community Association is delighted to have Jyoti and her Westland Insurance team in the neighbourhood. We wish them continued success in the years ahead.

Uptown Dawg

New Pet Supply Store Opens in Ocean Park: Welcome Uptown Dawg!
Ocean Park has a new addition to its community—a new pet food and supplies store, Uptown Dawg, has taken over the space previously occupied by Daniel Hofer's shop. The store is owned by Coral Fanstone, a Surrey resident, animal advocate, and busy mom to a toddler. Coral balances her roles as a full-time probation officer and Director of Endless Pawsabilities Rescue Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to animal welfare.
Uptown Dawg in Ocean Park is Coral's first location, joining her second store in Port Coquitlam. "As an animal lover and activist, I've always wanted to bring more resources for pets to the community," says Coral. "Ocean Park seemed like the perfect spot to expand."
Chelsea Robinson, who brings a wealth of experience to the team, helps Coral manage the new store. Originally from Ontario, Chelsea moved to British Columbia 12 years ago and now juggles life as a mom of three young children while running Canine Harmony Daycare and Boarding in Surrey.
Coral and Chelsea have been touched by the warm reception from the Ocean Park community. "People drop by just to say hello or share how much they love the look of the new storefront," they shared.
The Ocean Park Community Association welcomes Coral, Chelsea, and the Uptown Dawg team. We wish you great success!

QUARTZ, Mind, Body & Skin Clinic

In the non-stop, daily sprint to complete a trailing to-do list, taking care of oneself often slips to the bottom—if not off—the priority list entirely. Quartz Mind, Body + Skin Clinic reminds clients that prioritizing well-being is an investment in themselves that pays infinite dividends.
Opened two years ago in Ocean Park, Juli Rogerson is one of four proud Quartz Mind, Body + Skin Clinic owners. Juli grew up on the Peninsula and attended Star of the Sea Elementary School and Holy Cross High School. Growing up, Juli always had a passion for beauty and skincare. But Quartz’s vision goes beyond skincare; it is about fostering genuine trust, authenticity and empowerment. In a recent meet-up, Juli intimated that the holistic approach that defines Quartz Method combines Naturopathic care and Medical Aesthetics to create personalized treatment plans that don’t just target surface-level issues but dive deep into hormone health, lifestyle and overall well-being. Whether the client is looking to enhance their skin’s radiance, target acne, or understand hormonal health, Quartz offers a trusting space where they know highly experienced aestheticians and naturopathic physicians, such as Dr. Kaur, also one of the owners and Naturopathic Doctor & Clinic Director, have their best interest at heart.
Everyone at Quartz celebrates its success and aims to give clients a powerful message of hope: every issue and goal is not only possible but within reach and visible change. By prioritizing well-being from the inside out, the benefits ripple through every to-do list task and humdrum activity of everyday life. At Quartz, the team treats everyone as part of a family, in hands that they can truly trust to heal and thrive.
The Ocean Park Community Association is thrilled for Juli and her team at Quartz Mind, Body + Skin Clinic in Ocean Park as they continue to provide holistic treatments to clients and help clients reconnect with their bodies.
We support all of the local businesses and appreciate your support in patronizing them.

READ Surrey/White Rock

Did you know that 45% of adults in British Columbia struggle with tasks such as navigating websites, filling out forms, reading rental agreements, or following instruction manuals due to low literacy skills? Or that 52% of adults find it difficult to calculate medication dosages, interpret graphs, or complete logbooks at work because of low numeracy skills?
Fortunately, across British Columbia, there are 102 community literacy task groups working to address these challenges. These groups, comprised of literacy organizations, school districts, public libraries, colleges, universities, and service providers, aim to raise awareness and help people develop the literacy skills needed to improve their lives and opportunities.
READ Surrey/White Rock, a registered BC Society, is one of these 102 task groups. This dedicated small team of staff and volunteers believes in the importance of supporting others in reaching their literacy goals. Led by Literacy Outreach Coordinator, Shanti Ang, and Family Literacy Coordinator, Elise Hannan, READ Surrey/White Rock offers several literacy programs that make a real difference.
One of these programs is Read with Kids, where parents and caregivers receive books and resources to encourage reading with their children. In partnership with School District 36 (SD36) and SFU Community Engagement Centre, READ Surrey/White Rock also runs Book Buddies, a free one-on-one afterschool reading program for children in grades 2-4 at a high-needs school in Surrey. This initiative is funded by Decoda Literacy Solutions, BC’s provincial literacy organization.
Another impactful program is Introduction to Family Literacy, a free 12-hour workshop offered in collaboration with Surrey Libraries and SD36. It teaches frontline workers how to integrate family literacy into their work.
READ Surrey/White Rock also provides a Plain Language Workshop, a 2-hour online session where participants learn how to plan, write, edit, and design documents using clear language and accessible design principles. Additionally, they offer the Partners Adult Literacy Tutoring Program, a free, informal, non-credit program designed to help adults improve their reading, writing, and numeracy skills. This program is tailored to low-literacy and low-numeracy native-English speakers who might not access traditional educational programs. It offers individualized, flexible, one-to-one tutoring, with drop-in help available on a case-by-case basis.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, READ Surrey/White Rock launched the StoryWalk® Project. This innovative initiative transforms children’s books into outdoor (or indoor) self-guided experiences by laminating each page of the book and displaying them along community routes. These StoryWalk® kits are now available for organizations to borrow. Last fall, the Ocean Park Community Association borrowed the kit, “What the Seal Saw” by Sherry McMillan and set it up along Ocean Park Orchard. “It was a fantastic way for kids to read and play at the same time,” noted Laura Thibeault, OCPA Board member.
You can support READ Surrey/White Rock by making a financial contribution, becoming a volunteer tutor, or donating your empty bottles at any Return-It Express location using account number 778-242-7323.
To learn more or get involved, visit their website readsurreywhiterock.com or send them an email at [email protected] or call 778-242-READ (7323).

Niki Rapanos of NKR Downsizing

NKR Downsizing Solutions, located in Ocean Park Village, where Christopher's Gift Gallery used to be, is led by Niki Rapanos and offers a unique approach to downsizing and moving. Niki, who transitioned from Vancouver to Ocean Park seven years ago, has been instrumental in helping clients clear out their possessions through a sustainable process of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Following the decluttering phase, Niki's online auction service offers a hassle-free solution for items that need new homes. With a permanent shop in Ocean Park, Niki provides a dedicated space for these auctions. She collaborates closely with clients to select curated pieces that are likely to sell, and her team takes care of the lotting, photographing, and cataloguing of all saleable items. The online auction is then set up on the Maxsold Auction platform, and after a seven-day run, Niki ensures the safe and secure pickup of items sold at the Ocean Park shop.
Niki takes immense pride in her auction's 99% success rate, a testament to her meticulous selection of items for sale. She notes that jewelry, china, silverware, vintage items, and collectibles are particularly popular. She does not accept furniture for online auctions. Any unsold items are typically donated to charities based on the client's wishes.
With hundreds of items going up for auction each week, Niki stays busy but finds great satisfaction in helping clients find new homes for things they no longer need. One challenge, she acknowledges, is that clients don't always recover the original value of the items they once purchased. Nevertheless, Niki is grateful for the opportunity to serve the Ocean Park community and appreciates her clients' trust and support.
To book an appointment, contact Niki at 604-375-4646 or by email at [email protected]. For more information, visit Niki's website at www.nkrdownsizing.com or link to the website to get to the most current auction: www.nkrdownsizing.com/auctions

Second Home Curry

In the heart of Ocean Park, a humble take-out restaurant has become a favourite spot for those seeking authentic Northern Indian cuisine. Second Home Indian Curry, owned by Chef Rakesh Kumar and his wife Madhu, has established itself as a popular destination since its opening in March 2022. The couple is deeply grateful for the overwhelming support from the Ocean Park community.
Chef Rakesh Kumar's journey began long before Second Home Indian Curry's doors opened. He immigrated to Canada in 2008, bringing a wealth of culinary experience and a passion for traditional Indian cooking. One day after arriving in South Surrey, he began working as a chef at Rasoi Fine Indian Cuisine. Over the next thirteen years, Rakesh continued mastering his skills. He became a respected figure in the local community and proudly claimed the title of the oldest and longest-serving Indian chef with over twenty-five years of culinary experience.
For years, Rakesh dreamed of owning his restaurant. With the support of his wife, Madhu, that dream became a reality two years ago when they opened Second Home Indian Curry. The name reflects their philosophy: they want their customers to feel like they have a second home where they can enjoy a warm, home-cooked meal made with intention and love. Second Home Curry has gained a loyal following thanks to its commitment to quality and authenticity. Chef Rakesh offers a wide range of dietary preferences, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and meat dishes, ensuring everyone can find something to enjoy.
Rakesh and Madhu are thrilled to have chosen Ocean Park as the home for their restaurant. The community's warmth and support have made their experience as restaurant owners even more fulfilling. Whether you're a long-time resident of Ocean Park or just passing through, Second Home Indian Curry is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates the flavours of Northern India.

Rollie and Yvonne, Expedia Cruises

Rollie and Yvonne Blanchette, from their previous careers, found a new life and career in their love for travel when they retired early in their mid-fifties. The opportunity to buy into the Expedia Cruises franchise in the White Rock territory was a turning point. Starting from scratch, they quickly learned about the new business. They overcame challenges, from establishing their center in Ocean Park to balancing their work and family life with two children, one of whom is now an RCMP Constable in White Rock. This November, they will celebrate their 20th anniversary as Expedia Cruises Air Land & Sea Vacations franchise owners, with thirteen other independent consultants working with the WR office.
Expedia Cruises, North America's largest retail travel agency franchise, has won numerous awards for its sales, expansion, and marketing efforts. Rollie and Yvonne attribute the success of their independently owned franchise to factors such as brand recognition, innovative marketing strategies, cutting-edge technology, and strong partnerships with cruise liners. However, what truly sets Rollie and Yvonne apart is their unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional service. This commitment was never more evident than during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Rollie and Yvonne tirelessly assisted stranded clients abroad and facilitated refunds for cancelled travel plans, demonstrating their reliability and trustworthiness.
When asked about their retirement plans, Rollie and Yvonne’s response is a testament to their deep-rooted passion for work. For them, the daily interactions with clients and the sense of fulfillment they bring transcend mere employment. Even after two decades in the industry, the allure of travel continues to captivate them. Having already embarked on sixty-two cruises, Rollie and Yvonne envision many more future voyages. This prospect excites them, especially when they imagine sharing these experiences with their children and grandchildren.
The Ocean Park Community Association takes pride in having Rollie and Yvonne as valued community members for numerous years. We extend our warmest wishes to Rollie, Yvonne, and the entire Expedia Cruises team for continued success.

Laura Woroniecki, Not For Long

Many parents resonate with the quotation "Not For Long," which exemplifies childhood's brevity— a reminder that our children are constantly growing, not just out of their clothing, but of themselves.
The concept of a consignment store for children's second-hand clothing was initiated by Laura Woroniecki, an Ocean Park resident, nearly 15 years ago, who established the Not For Long Consignment Boutique in White Rock. After six years, Laura relocated her store to Ocean Park, where she has served the community for nine years. The evolution of the store mirrors the growth of Laura's children. Initially focusing on consignment items for babies and toddlers, Not For Long is no longer a consignment shop but a full-fledged children's boutique offering new products, from clothes and toys to necessities, catering to babies all the way to teenagers.
Not For Long is supported by a dedicated group of women who have been part of Laura's journey since its inception. Jay and Colleen, who have been with the store for 13 years, share a long-standing friendship with Laura. Jay was a classmate of Laura's since 2nd grade. Colleen was the first customer to set foot in Not For Long. Morgan, a long-time customer, joined the team when they moved to Ocean Park 9 years ago. Hayden, Laura's oldest daughter, spent her toddler years playing in the store and now works part-time there. Consequently, Laura does not see her shop as a one-person show but as "a shared business" with her co-workers, who put much passion and joy into growing the business.
Laura also expresses deep gratitude for the unwavering support of the local community. The idea of "shop local" resonated strongly during COVID. Local parents rallied behind her business, enabling it to weather the challenges during the pandemic and emerge resiliently.
True to its name, "Not for Long," the store has grown and adapted, reflecting the dynamic journey of childhood and community support.
The Ocean Park Community Association is thrilled to have Laura and her team in Ocean Park, and we wish them much success in their business. We support all of the local businesses and appreciate your support in patronizing them.

Julie Burns, SouthRock Resale

Julie Burns, a former firefighter from Halifax, moved to South Surrey in 2014 and has been an Ocean Park resident ever since. Julie started her own business by curating bags of clothes for customers out of her house. Her unique contactless business model, which allowed customers to try on the clothes she had selected and only keep what they liked, proved successful when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Her business was able to continue without any disruptions. Julie's business grew organically with more Instagram marketing and pop-up shops. Julie eventually took over the lease of the then-Play Cafe in Ocean Park and opened her store almost two years ago.
Today, South Rock Consignment is the only consignment store in Ocean Park and stands apart from others for its luxurious clothing lines and wonderful curated customer experience. South Rock Resale thrives with a large, loyal customer base and abundant inventory. Julie feels truly blessed to be able to pursue her dream of having her shop, doing what she loves in her community, and meeting amazing people daily.
Bi-annually, South Rock Resale holds its end-of-season sale at Ocean Park Hall, a now highly anticipated event. Julie donates all unsold end-of-season clothes to the Peace Arch Hospice Society Thrift Store on 24th Ave., promoting sustainability by recycling and reusing clothes meaningfully.
South Rock Resale is open Monday to Saturday, 11 am to 6 pm.
The Ocean Park Community Association is thrilled to have Julie, our OP resident and business owner. We support all of our local businesses and appreciate your support in patronizing them.

Cara Lawson of Cara Interiors

Cara Lawson, owner and principal interior designer of Cara Interiors, is a lifelong resident of Ocean Park. She was raised in the Ocean Park community since she was two and a half years old. Growing up, Cara had always loved interior design and got into the business eighteen years ago when the opportunity allowed her to pursue her dream.
Sitting in Morrison Cafe eating lunch with her two sons four years ago, Cara saw the "For Lease" sign outside Sticky's Candy, and her second dream of having her design studio came true. Initially, the studio opening was fraught with immense challenges as it opened two weeks before COVID-19 hit. With perseverance and creativity, Cara and her associate, Ashley Murray, pivoted the business to support the many clients who were, at the time, unable to order supplies from anyone for their projects. Through their many suppliers, Cara and Ashley were able to help the homeowners complete their projects. Looking back, Cara intimated she was scared of uncertainty when the pandemic first hit but was fortunate not to have any challenges of lack of business. We were extremely busy and took on as many as 26 projects. Business continued to pour in throughout this time.
Today, Cara Interiors is thriving. Cara offers a full range of interior design services to residential and commercial clientele. Their specialty of having a cabinetry line is also a plus in the complete offering of services that many other studios do not have. Collaborating with each customer from beginning to finish, Cara and her team help to create the perfect vision of what the client wants for their home and more.
A wonderful team of women supports Cara: Ashley Murray, her associate designer, who has been with Cara for the last four years, and Rianne McMillan, her administrative and marketing assistant. The team is grateful to be a part of the Ocean Park community and is humbled to be able to bring their expertise and passion to the South Surrey/White Rock community and beyond.
The Ocean Park Community Association is thrilled to have Cara and her team in Ocean Park, and we wish them much success in their business. We support all of our businesses and appreciate your support in patronizing them.

Rob and Jalene of Islands Cafe

Ocean Park has a new coffee house this summer with Robb and Jalene Harding as owners. Robb and Jalene Harding grew up in Ocean Park; both attended Ocean Cliff Elementary School and Laronde Elementary and graduated from Elgin Park High. Facing cancer in his 20s and subsequently getting a clean bill of health, Robb moved to the North Shore Oahu, Hawaii, in 2004. At the time, Robb and Jalene had dated on and off but reunited when Jalene moved to Hawaii. They eventually returned to BC, married, and now live in White Rock with their beautiful daughter.
With a massive passion for Hawaiian culture and life, Robb and Jalene opened their first coffee house, Islands Cafe, in White Rock, replicating Hawaiian-inspired artwork, decorations, music, coffee and food in 2016. Two years later, Robb and Jalene opened their second cafe in Grandview and, this June, their third coffee house in Ocean Park.
It's always been Robb and Jalene's dream to create a market for people looking for delicious coffee and quick but healthy food options. Island Cafe roasts its coffee and provides an impressive food menu, including delightful acai and poke bowls, smoothies packed with vitamins, homemade sandwiches, bagels and flatbreads. The surrounding decorations and music culminate to create an aura of authenticity on the islands of the Pacific. A labour of love, Robb and Jalene are hopeful their new branch in Ocean Park will also flourish, serving the community with good coffee and food.
The Ocean Park Community Association supports all our local businesses and hopes you will patronize them as much as possible.

Melanie, from Blume Beauty Spa

Good things come to those who wait. This is the excitement Melanie Campbell, owner of Blume Beauty Spa, felt on June 20, 2023, at her spa's Grand Opening. The opening celebration, delayed by three years because of COVID, also coincided with the spa's re-branding and tenth anniversary!
As a young girl who grew up in Prince George, BC, Melanie loved to play princess with her nails, hair and makeup always done to perfection. After high school, Melanie attended beauty school and has been working in the beauty service industry for over twenty years. Moving out of Prince George, then Kelowna, and in 2005, Melanie moved permanently to South Surrey/White Rock. Her home is now Ocean Park, just a short walk from her beauty spa.
With many loyal customers from the previous location on 140th Street, Blume is literally "blooming." Melanie's dream of owning a business has been realized for the last ten years as she works hard to make each of her customers come out of her spa feeling completely satisfied. Her philosophy is that every client's needs should be met with care and attention. Melanie and the seven-member staff ensure that Blume Beauty Spa does just that by offering a full-service spa with luxurious facials, nail and foot care, waxing, and brow and lash care. The spa also caters to private spa parties and holds exclusivity to sell Jane Iredale makeup and GM Collin skincare products. Melanie is particularly proud that Dr. Steven Blyth, M.D. head of the emergency at Surrey Memorial, is an on-call staff to perform Botox and dermal filler injections.
Melanie is excited that her son, Bennett, will enter kindergarten at Ocean Cliff Elementary in the Fall. She looks forward to making new friends at the school and helping build the community she works and lives in.
The Ocean Park Community Association is so pleased to have Blume Beauty Spa in Ocean Park and hopes our community will support Melanie and her business to continue to "Blume"!

Judy and Steve from Ocean Park Flowers

Years ago, a young girl met a young boy at a wedding. She was a guest at the wedding, and he was part of the wedding party. As the young girl watched the boy sing, she momentarily dreamed, like an infatuated teenager, of being with the boy and carrying his last name, "Judy Barrett, Judy Barrett, Judy Barrett," floated in her mind.
Fast forward a year later, Steve Barrett met a friend for lunch who happened to bring Judy along. The rest is history as Judy and Steve Barrett live happily ever after.
Somewhere in between, though, Judy and Steve began their professional careers on very different paths. Judy started working in the fashion industry while completing her Bachelor degree (English) at the University of British Columbia. Her passion for visual arts led her to attend Kwantlen College in floristry, a field in which she excelled. Subsequently, Judy pursued the highest floristry accreditation with the American Institute of Floral Design (AIFD). Judy is currently among the 1,200 florists in the world who are accredited members of AIFD and have demonstrated their skills to be advanced floral design artists. Steve's early career began in marketing and commercials. For a time, Steve was an actor appearing in numerous TV commercials and then as a TV producer for commercials.
In 2010, Judy and Steve found a storefront in Ocean Park and immediately fell in love with the "village" vibes. Their Ocean Park Flowers shop became a family business that Judy and Steve have dreamed of combining their business acumen and love for flowers. The Barretts take great joy and pride in serving their loyal customers. Steve intimated that flowers play an important role in people's lives on many momentous occasions as flowers can say love, console in sorrow, congratulate in achievement and celebrate friendship. And he and Judy are grateful for people's trust in them to ensure they can help make those occasions beautifully observed.
Looking ahead, Judy and Steve are looking to expand their business to include teaching. They would like to empower those who want to learn a new skill in floral arrangements in a social setting and those who wish to pursue a vocation in floristry.
Judy and Steve are thankful daily for being part of this vibrant community and do not take their success for granted. They are parents of two young adults, one who has finished university, and the other is still in university. But as the family business goes, the kids still play an essential role in supporting the business even though they have their own lives. Ocean Park Flowers is here to stay.
The Ocean Park Community Association is so happy that Judy and Steve, Ocean Park Flowers owners, are an integral part of our community. We support all our local businesses and appreciate your help in patronizing them.

Abby and Jas from Morrison Cafe

Abhinav (Abby) and Jyoti J. Solanki (Jas) have been proud owners of the much beloved Morrison Cafe in Ocean Park since November 2022. With a hospitality background, Abby worked in five-star hotels and on cruise ships before becoming Denny's regional manager for the last ten years. Jas, with an MBA in finance, worked in the banking industry.
The couple's dream has always been to have their restaurant, a combined passion for the service industry and business, which prompted Abby and Jas to secure a "cafe style" restaurant. As fate would have it, a coffee at Morrison Cafe one afternoon led them to the discovery of the sale of the cafe, and like love at sight, Abby intimated that "the whole vibe of the restaurant, the staff and especially the guests who were in the restaurant that day, felt just right." Six months on, Abby and Jas are thrilled they made the right decision. Every day, Abby and Jas look to build on the business; they are slowly changing the menu, elevating the quality of food with new dishes, buying from local businesses to support the community, hiring new staff like more younger people who live in Ocean Park, as well as extending opening hours to serve dinner (8 am-8 pm). So far, Abby and Jas love being business owners and love being in Ocean Park. On their off days, which aren't too many, Abby and Jas spend all their time with their two young daughters, ages six and fifteen.
The Ocean Park Community Association welcomes Abby and Jas to Ocean Park, supports all our local businesses, and appreciates your help in patronizing them.

Beth Faester, Eurovision Optical

Beth Faester has had her optical business in Ocean Park for twenty years. A native of Alberta, Beth moved to North Surrey after graduation from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) with her then-husband, an optician; together, they opened an optical shop.
In 2003, Beth opened Eurovision Optical and has been an integral and active business community member in the Ocean Park community. The loyal customers reciprocate Beth's love for the OP community over the years by supporting her business. These days, Eurovision is very much a family business, with Beth's son, Kevin, working alongside her side. Eurovision provides complete service for eye care. An optometrist, Dr. Karen Eddy, is on the premise for eye exams, and Beth and Kevin make the glasses right in the store.
When Beth is not busy in the shop, she loves to ski, is an avid golfer, and knitter. Her precious free time, of course, is spent doting on her parents and five grandchildren. Beth strongly supports the Ocean Park Community and loves participating in all the activities. She is also a philanthropist. For the last twenty, she has been subsidizing all eyewear for the Launching Pad, a non-profit addiction treatment centre for men.

Shaughn Smith, Ocean Park Fine Meats

Recently, OPCA President, Daisy Lifvenborg caught up with Shaughn Smith of Ocean Park Fine Meats! Here's Shaughn's story.
At 17, Shaughn Smith's mom directed him to get a job. She then told him which position, "Here, get this job," as she pointed to a newspaper ad from the shop owner, Al Forbes, of Ocean Park Fine Meats. Twenty years later, Shaughn bought the business from Al and his wife, Gaye. Shaughn and his wife, Melissa, are now proud owners of Ocean Park Fine Meats for the last ten years.
One of the joys of being a business owner is knowing that you are providing good food, and good service, to the community, Shaughn intimated. Over the years, Shaughn and Melissa have considered themselves lucky to have a robust community of loyal customers. Almost everyone who enters the shop is greeted on a first-name basis by the seven-member crew working in the store. A bonus is that Shaughn and Melissa are also Ocean Park residents, thus allowing them to know many families, even their pets, intimately. To ensure the business continues to grow and thrive, Shaughn is already looking to train his nephews, ages 2 and 5, to take over the business one day.
When not working, Shaughn is the drummer in the band, The Lily Dippers. The original band writes their music and songs and performs in Vancouver. Shaughn also loves to ski and snowboard. Shaughn and his wife share a passion for golf. Melissa, of course, would claim she is the better player.
The Ocean Park Community Association is proud to have Shaughn and Melissa in Ocean Park. We encourage you to support all of our local businesses to help our community thrive.

Paul Thomson, Safeway

Did you know the Ocean Park Safeway has been serving loyal customers since 1966? You bet! Here's what else OPCA President, Daisy, learned.
Paul Thomson has been the store manager at Ocean Park for over five years, but his career with Safeway has spanned over 35 years in 17 different stores. Paul intimated that the Ocean Park Safeway is scheduled next in line for a complete store renovation within the next year or two. The store will continue to be open as it goes thru the interior renovation.
Ocean Park Safeway has been a big supporter of the OPCA with their annual participation in the Halloween and Easter Parades, and the Amazing Race in Ocean Park Village (we might have had people hunt for pickled eggs and sardines for that event!) and they have always generously provided the parking lot for our family movie night...which might just be in the works for the end-of-summer! More on that in the next eblast.
Recently, Paul has worked with head office to complete a beautification clean-up at the corner of 128th and 16th Ave. We thank Safeway for their continued support of our community!

Rakesh Kumar, Second Home Curry
OPCA VP, Laura Thibeault, recently ordered in from Second Home Indian Curry. Here's what she had to say about the new addition to the Village, located in the breezeway of Ocean Park Shopping Centre. "We ordered a family celebration meal there and it was terrific! Owner, Rakesh Kumar, used to be the Chef at Rasoi. Their loss is our gain; he and his family are now providing delicious food (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and meat options) at 12869 16 Avenue. It’s strictly takeout; use Uber-eats if you don’t want to pick up yourself." See www.secondhomecurry.ca or call 236-476-3222.

Daniel Hofer, Neighbourhood Pet Food & Supplies
Did you know the Neighborhood Pet Foods & Supplies Store in Ocean Park has been around for 21 years? Daniel Hofer (Dan), an Ocean Park resident, became the latest owner on Halloween 2020. The store quickly went through a much-needed renovation and saw a significant increase in inventory, as evident by the fully stocked shelves.
On a recent sunny day, Daisy Lifvenborg, OPCA President, stopped in to chat with Daniel. As a shop owner, Dan's focus is to enhance the shopping experience for his customers, which means offering a variety of goods from raw to dry options and a wide array of pet supplies for dogs, cats, birds and fish. Dan intimated that if a customer wants something custom, he can order from one of his many suppliers. And speaking of suppliers, Dan is conscious of supporting local businesses like himself; thus, you will find many of his products are from the lower mainland and White Rock. One of Dan's two daughters also works in the store; which is open Monday- Saturday from 9:30 am - 5:30 pm. Dan is super excited to be a part of the many OPCA events, and we thank him for his continued support of the community. |

S.T., Ocean Park Subway
Yes, that's right! Everyone calls him S.T.! Recently, OPCA President, Daisy Lifvenborg popped into chat with the 25 year Ocean Park SUBWAY owner! Over the years, S.T. has seen a lot of changes in Ocean Park, but his business remains committed to Ocean Park Community, and he loves the fact some of the local high school kids who used to work for him are now bringing their children to the shop. The store recently got upgraded in March for a more modern and clean interior. For ordering, S.T. comments that the SUBWAY's App offers discounts that are not always available in-store, so we should all check it out. S.T's children, who work in the store, support the family business and can be seen working alongside him.
The Ocean Park Community Association supports our local businesses, and we hope you will too! |

She does special facials for teens to help them cope with problem skin and develop great routines. More ‘mature’skin responds beautifully to her work as well. A true believer in all things Ocean Park, as well as setting up shop here, Patricia chose Cara Interiors to help design her space and another local firm, Collins Interiors to do the construction. Employees are locals too. You’re welcome to drop by, ask questions, receive a free consultation and buy what you need in the store. Or you can ask questions online and place your order that way. Patricia and her team are truly experienced in online sales; hers is the largest authorized Eminence online retailer in Canada.
